Special Legal Session Sunday
August 17, 2008 3:00pm - 4:30pm Edgewater A
Come hear and ask questions of veterans of the homeschool battles as they talk about the recent Southern California court
case, the attitude in the legislature, and most important of all, is it still legal to teach your kids at home, or will someone
come knocking on your door? Featured Panelists:
Debbie Schwarzer
-- HSC's legal co-chair and the main inside attorney for HSC on the case -- will talk about the principal issues,
the court's approach, and how all the different interest groups agreed or differed. Leslie Buchanan
-- President of the HSC Board -- will talk about all of her media outreach and legislative efforts and what it was like being
the point person for a scary crisis. Elizabeth Bryant -- HSC's legal chair -- will discuss
how the court's original opinion and subsequent developments have affected the attitudes of governmental personnel in
dealing with homeschoolers, whether on truancy issues, welfare or other matters. Jerry Salcido -- a
member of HSC's legal team who represented CHN in the appeal -- will talk about his perspective on what courts handling
abuse cases involving homeschooling want to do and can do, and how that impacts all of us. Stephen Greenberg
--assisted HSC's pro bono law firm with its brief -- will discuss his role in developing the original legal arguments
in favor of private homeschooling.
